The ongoing construction of a Self-Defense Forces base on Magejima Island in Nishinoomote City, Kagoshima Prefecture, has temporarily shifted to a historical quest. In the midst of the ongoing base construction along with the relocation of U.S. military aircraft training, an important archaeological site - the Paleolithic "Yaeshi (Yaeishi) Site" - was discovered. Excavation for the preservation of this site has begun, opening a new stage for both historical discovery and modern base construction.
